1.1) History of the region of Cairns |
| | |
Captain Cook was the first European who explored Trinity Bay near Cairns and more northern Cooktown in the year 1770. |
| | |
 |
| | |
 |
| | |
2.1) Attractions of the region of Cairns |
| | |
Fascinating underwater world – Great Barrier Reef The bizarre underwater world of this “eightth world wonder” is the largest reef formation of the world. The tangle of coral reefs, islands and passages is placed in front of the tropical coast of Queensland and stretches over 2000 km up to Papua New Guinea. It covers an area of 260 000 km² and reaches a depth of 150m. From the 600 islands, only 18 are developed for tourists. But the ecology of this unique world is threatened.
Animals of the reef The unique ecosystem of the Great Barrier Reef provides a home for about 14 000 types of sea animals, amongst them 1500 types of fish. Here you can find for example emperior and doctor fish, snapper, coral trout, manta-stingrays, sharks and the deathly stonefish. Beside corals in all colours of the sun there are giant mussels, dolphins, whales, sea cows and six different types of turtles, for whom the Great Barrier Reef is a breeding area of essential importance. 240 types of birds inhabitate the islands of the reef, amongst others the white-tailed eagle, ibisses, egrets and frigate birds.
Magic world of corals Corals are calcereous sceletons from tiny water animals, which live in bioceonosis with algae. The coral polypes, which are surrounded with calc, are flexible and gelatineous. They live together with single-celled round algae, which are able to do photosynthesis and also with thread-like green algae. Those three benefit from each other in a complex mechanism. Corals are carnivores. With the help of their tentacles, they catch, lame and murder their prey, the tiny zoo plankton. After the digestion, the polyp gives off nutriments to the algae, which again provides it with food energy. There are over 400 types of hard corals in the Great Barrier Reef in all imaginable colours. They need water temperatures between 20° and 25° Celsius and grow up to 40m of depth. For living they need clean, oxygen-rich water with a high calcium concentration. Because young corals settle on the calc bodies of dead corals, a reef can grow with the time. The Great Barrier Reef is seen as the largest living system of the world.
Ecology of the Reef The sensitive system of the manifold animals of the reef is pretty accident-sensitive. Even the nature itself pose a threat to the damageable ecosystem with cyclones and floods. Some certain coral types for example, from whom again higher animals like sea urchins, crabbs or sea turtles feed upon, smart under the natural discharge of fresh water and mudd. But a greater danger for the corals comes from a human-caused problem: washed in dung and pesticeds. Furthermore there is the gobal earth warming and the resulting increase of the water temperature. It has a negative effect on certain algae, from whom corals feed upon. So the coral starves and bleaches. Large areals are already affected by this bleaching. Also the growing tourisme damages the Reef. It’s said that careless divers should have destroyed 50 000 coral banks at least. The picking of corals is forbidden in the meantime and will be imposed from the “Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority” (GBRMPA) with a high fine. Although environmentalists fight industrial major projects like calc extraction and oil production, the GBRMPA expects also proposals for the economical use of the reef, which in the meantime is named Marine Park. |

2.2) Attractions of the region of Cairns – Islands |
| | |
Northern Islands The Northern Islands are characterised by a tropical flora. Close rain forests also turn the world above the water to an exotic experience. Like on Green Island – a coral island, which is surrounded completely by the reef. Also surrounded by the reef are the 324ha of the rain forest from Fitzroy Island, an immersed mountain. Hinchinbrook Island provides a scenically alternation: steep cliffs and white sand beaches besides canyons, forests and water falls. Kakadus and the rare wampoo dove are fascinating as well as the dolphins and sea turtles. On Magnetic island, many cuddlesome koalas are cavorting. Three quarters of the area of Dunk Island is protected. Here the “heraldic animal”, the blue ulysses butterfly, flutters through the rain forest. Lizard Island gained its name from his primeval inhabitants, the lizards. The “jewel of the Great Barrier Reef” is placed directly on top of the reef, this is why the famous Captain James Cook already stranded in front of Australias northernmost island. Named after a big fish: the so-called “Cod Hole” is considered as a perfect diving area. You can swim not only with the namesakes, the “Potato Cods”, but also with many colourful shimmering exotes. And in Clam Gardens, 150 year old giant mussels are waiting for discoverer.
Whitsunday Group The Whitsundays are made up of 74 tropical islands. They are placed in the Coral Sea between the coas of Queensland and the Great Barrier Reef. Basically they are mountains, whose peaks loom out of the water. One of the most secure sailing area: Because the water is protected bye the many islands, you can go on excursion without sailing permit. Only eight of the islands are colonized – best conditions for your own Robinson-feeling. The national park islands Long Island and Brampton Island are considered as two most beautiful ones: palm trees, rain forest and exotic animals like goannas and wallabys attest from an almost untouched environment. Directly at the main beach of Brampton Island you can snorkel through the Bariton coral garden. On top of the volcano island Lindeman Island and on the Hayman Island, numerous eucalyptus trees give off their aromatic fragrance.
Southern Islands Some of the islands are located directly on top of the Great Barrier Reef – like Heron. The island is as a real coral island part of the reef and provides pure nature as a national park island. The most beautiful coral gardens are placed only a few swim strokes away from the beach. From November until March, sea turtles come to the islands to place their eggs. From December on, the babies hatch out and crawl into the water. From June to October you can watch humpback whales . The national park Fraser Island is the largest sand island of the world. Whether huge sand dunes, freshwater lakes, wild flowers or rank rain forests with the rare giant fern: the lanscape is almoust untouched. On Moreton Island, there is not only the largest sand dune of the world but also beaches in all shadings. Almost 90% of the area is national park: saurians, freshwater turtles and whales have their homes here. In the Tangalooma Wild Dolphin Resort the dolphins regularly come up to the beach. Lady Elliot Island is the most southern island which is placed on the Great Barrier Reef. Directly from the beach you can snorkel to sunken ships, which stranded on the reef – despite the historical lighthouse, which has been sending its firer over the sea for nearly 130 years. |

We bought a lot of books in Australia. There, countless Fossicking Areas were listed and also described, but it hasn’t been a real help for us. First, many of this so called Fossicking Areas were exploited and on the other hand it has been much too dangerous in parts. This is why we decided to list those Fossicking Areas, which you can find without “big problems”. And to see that the found stones are not valueless, you can survey them in our Australian Shop. In 4 years, there have come up over 149 PDF files in this way. Further information about the subject Fossicking can be found here: http://fossicking.fly-to-australia.com/ . |
